The Stuff that MattRs

Monday Motivation. Let this week be the one where you learn how to finish that thing that you started. Completer-finisher skills are critical to any project, and knowing how you can get something across the line is essential to progressing your career. I have actionable tips that you can use.

After. Ten things you will not get until after the work is done. Now that you have built those completer-finisher skills, here’s what remains AFTER you get your work done.

Focus. Eight ways to stop getting distracted. I’m a big fan of number five as a way of getting stuff done without distractions.

Flow. The neuroscience behind deep work. Your brain works differently when you focus deeply on your priority tasks. I’ve talked about Slow Productivity and Deep Work before, in issue 203 and in my notes on Cal Newports book of the same name.

Busy. It’s time to stop bragging about how busy you are. Your co-workers hate it, and your stress is contagious. Some practical ways to stop bragging about how busy you are.

Journal. How to use a work journal. A work journal can help clarify your thoughts and find focus.  I have journal prompts to help with your weekly self-review, your career and with reflection. Bonus Stuff: My free 28 day journaling course will help you get started.

Life. Random ideas about life. From James Clear, who gives this stuff a lot more thought than most people. I really like the point about Average Speed over Maximum Speed, and the final point about giving things away is the guiding principle behind why my newsletter will always be free.

Relationships. Be a thermostat not a thermometer. Excellent essay on detecting when things β€˜feel off’ in a work environment, and what to do in that situation.

Limits. Whatever you think your limits are, you’re wrong. I love the analogy of undiscovered places in your house that you find when at unexpected times. The idea that we have parts of ourselves that are yet to be uncovered and explored is life affirming.

SelfFive lovely ways to put yourself first. The advice to 'simplify your life' is sometimes counter intuitive to self-care, but it works in the long term.

Criticism. How to be less self-critical.  Five excellent ways to get on top of the inner voice.

FinallySquish the ants. Simple, silly fun to distract you for a while.

πŸ”ˆ Stuff to Listen to...

🎧 This week, my musical recommendation is the new album from London based DJ, Musician and Producer - Jamie XX. A big favourite on my playlists who has featured on a lot of my monthly mixtapes.

In Waves is a collection of dancefloor friendly electronica with some great influences from UK Garage and plunderphonics with some superb samples in amongst squelchy beats. There is even a collaboration with Avalanches on the recent single 'All you People'.

I love Jamies music, which is listenable and danceable at the same time.

I think this one is superb, and a highly recommended album.
