Weeknote #25

My week away from the newsletter - music, travel and the rest.

Updates

A week in Austin, Texas for work. It started with a cancelled flight on Monday morning, a reroute and an uncharacteristic week of stormy weather in the Texan capital. The return travel was uneventful, and the travel gods got me on an early flight home where I am writing this update.

The work was good though, a chance to sit with my new team and make some plans for the new half.

Have been reading Discriminations by AC Grayling on my travels, more of that to come.

Watched

Enjoyed a great TV series over the last couple of weeks, and a few movies whilst travelling.

On the TV front, I recommend Department Q on Netflix (trailer on Youtube). The familiar story of a broken cop solving a big case - but done in an excellent style. Give it watch if you can.

Movies I watched whilst travelling:

A ★★★★½ review of Parthenope (2024)
Beautifully made story of a young woman enjoying the summers of her early life in Naples and beyond. Some great scenes, including a super performance from Gary Oldman. I loved this - highly recommended.
A ★★★½ review of Queer (2024)
I thought this was well acted, but I found it hard to warm to the characters. Some fairly trippy sequences included in the story by William S Burroughs. Might be worth a second watch to get into it more.
A ★★★½ review of A Working Man (2025)
Enjoyable, but 100% throwaway movie with Statham playing the part of an ex-marine, trying to live out a ‘normal’ life in construction but ending up involved in a people trafficking crime ring. Typical fight & action sequences. A lot of fun in places.

My recommended listen this week is the new Album from Rival Consoles, MindsEye.

Rival Consoles is the ongoing project from Ryan Lee West from London, and MindsEye is the Soundtrack from a video game of the same name.

Some blistering electronica here, and a great snack to tide us over before another new album due in early July.

Highly Recommended.
