Master the Matrix by Susan Z. Finerty

My notes on Master the Matrix: 7 Essentials for Getting Things Done in Complex Organisations by Susan Z. Finerty.
This was a book given to me at a work conference, and is a great guide to working in a matrix style organisation.
Master the Matrix offers a practical compass for navigating complexity. It can be an excellent guide to sharpen how you align, influence and deliver in your cross‑functional world.
What is a Matrix Organisation?
A matrix organisation is a structure where employees work with multiple managers, typically by function and by project, region or product.
It blends traditional vertical hierarchies with horizontal collaboration, creating a network of shared responsibilities.
This setup aims to increase flexibility, innovation and responsiveness, but often leads to confusion over roles, priorities and decision rights.
To succeed in a matrix, you need strong relationships, clear communication and the ability to influence without relying on authority.
Core premise of Master the Matrix
- Modern organisations operate as matrix structures, with teams aligned by product, geography or function, layered with cross‑functional collaboration.
- Success in a matrix demands shifting from silos to flow, like navigating a traffic roundabout (or circle in the US) - not lanes or intersections.
