#41 - From Dublin

Updates

This week has been super busy at work, lots to do ahead of some vacation time in a couple of weeks, so I've been putting the hours in!

Highlight for me was booking some smashing concert tickets to Kraftwerk in Dublin next year. I love the feeling of writing gigs in the diary and next year is already looking a lot of fun. Alongside Kraftwerk, we have The Cure, Marlon Williams, Christian Loffler and Gene.

My quiz team had a smashing win on Wednesday night which was very pleasing, including a decent score for me - so we're having fun this season after a very poor start.

I've continued with my quest to scan my old nightclub flyers, and I'm building up a nice gallery which I'll display online as soon as I'm done.

Movies

Watched a few this week - one brilliant, two not so much!

A ★★★★★ review of Steve (2025)
Brief. Bleak. Brilliant. Superb performance from Cillian Murphy and a great ensemble cast.
A ★★ review of Dirty Angels (2024)
Not great.
A ★★★ review of Ballerina (2025)
I have a soft spot for the John Wick universe... Keanu Reeves is always a lot of fun, and the ultraviolence is always quite cartoonish. I did worry that they were dragging it out a little bit, and the last films have felt a bit tired. This branches out with a new character, played by Ana de Armas - who is *lovely*, but it felt a bit same old. And then John Wick appeared again. I think I may depart the John Wick canon now.

Lots of great new music this week, and it's hard to pick a 'best' recommendation here.

However, last week I saw Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan live in Dublin, and this week the new album is released - and it really does need listening to.

Public Works and Utilities is another album of analogue synth goodness, with squelches and bleeps abound. The standout track is the b-side of the album, 'The People Matter'. It is one continuous track which which transports my back to the early eighties optimism of new town developments and Tomorrows World.

My vinyl copy arrived yesterday morning and it's been on repeat since.

Lovely stuff, and hugely listenable. Highly recommended.
