#32 - From Dublin

Updates

A busy week at work, meant little time for side quests but I managed to get some writing done this week.

I finished Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber - I enjoyed the ideas and the detailed research in the book, my review is here.

I also spent some time reflecting on nearly five years of running my newsletter and came up with a list of things that I've learned along the way.

I need to devote some time this week to the next release of startwriting.now which still seems to be gathering new visitors. I need to spruce up the UI and add some more features.

Oh - and I got see some live music last weekend...

Live Music

I went to see Glaswegian post-rock band Mogwai last weekend at Vicar Street in Dublin. My evening got off to an interesting start as I took the DART into the city and then promptly walked to Whelans before realising I was at the wrong venue! A quick cab later I got to Vicar Street in time to see most of the support act, Cloth.

Mogwai took to the stage about 9.15 and played an excellent set from across their catalogue. The stage show is quite stark, allowing focus on the musicality and intensity of the sound.

I was glad for my loopz earplugs to protect my hearing - it was a loud one!

Setlist from setlist.fm and a few snaps from the show below:

My musical recommendation this week is the new album from Fever Ray, a Scandinavian act founded by former singer of The Knife, Karen Dreijer.

I'm a long time fan, and so this album is perfect - remixed and reperformed tracks from across three albums and put together for live (?) sessions.

Highly recommended.
