# Ypres, Belgium

On a cold and appropriately grey day between Christmas and New Year, we visited Ypres in Belgium - and visited a few of the historical sites from World War One including:

- [Tyne-Cot](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyne%5FCot?ref=mattrutherford.co.uk) cemetery, where nearly 12000 British and Commonwealth bodies are buried.
- [Langemark](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langemark%5FGerman%5Fwar%5Fcemetery?ref=mattrutherford.co.uk) cemetery where over 44000 German soldiers are buried and commemorated.
- [The Menin Gate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menin%5FGate?ref=mattrutherford.co.uk), where the last post ceremony has been observed almost continuously since 1927.
- The Christmas Truce memorial, [near Comines-Warneton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comines-Warneton?ref=mattrutherford.co.uk) where a football match was played out on Christmas Day 1914.
