- Description: You have run the numbers twice and they work. That was never the problem.

The move is available. You have run the numbers and they work. Your partner is supportive. There is even a version of the timing that is genuinely good.

You are still not doing it.

Every reason you give is a logistic. Not until the project ships. Not until the youngest starts school. Not with the market the way it is.

## Logistics can be argued with

Which is exactly why you reach for them.

A practical objection can be discussed. Somebody can help you solve it, or agree that it is real, and either way you have had a sensible conversation about your career. Now say the other thing out loud in a professional setting.

> I do not know who I am if I am not the person who does this.

Nobody says that at work. Most people do not say it at home either. So it comes out as timing, every single time.

Here is the test.

> If somebody removed the logistic entirely, funded the year, fixed the timing, sorted the school run, would you go?

If the answer takes longer to arrive than you expected, the logistic was never the thing.

## Nobody thinks their way into a new identity

You have been waiting to feel like the person who does this before you do it. That is the same condition as waiting to feel ready, and it is just as impossible to meet, because the feeling is produced by the doing rather than the other way around.

I have not found an exception.

People do not decide they are a coach, a founder, a writer, somebody who lives in a different country, and then start behaving accordingly. They do a small version of it badly, feel like a fraud the entire time, do it again, and somewhere around the fourth or fifth attempt the description stops feeling borrowed.

> **The identity comes last.** It always comes last.

## The smallest version, with a witness

Not the big leap. [Nothing happens at your desk](https://www.mattrutherford.co.uk/nothing-happens-at-your-desk/) said a move needs another person, a date, and a real possibility of being turned down.

This is the smallest thing that clears that bar.

> What is one thing the next version of you would do this week, and who would see you do it?

The witness is not optional. Done privately, it stays reversible, and reversible is how five years pass with a great deal of thinking behind you and nothing to show for it.

Somebody has to see it for it to have happened.

## Five weeks, five ways of being stuck

Nothing wrong, so nothing moving. Still good at it and quietly finished with it. Knowing the answer and not knowing the price. Running hard on a measure somebody else wrote. Then this one, where everything is solved except who you would have to stop being.

They are not the same problem and they do not have the same answer, which is why being told to be braver rarely helps anybody. The first useful move is naming which one you are in, out loud, to somebody who will push back on what you say.

From November, that is what I do for a living. If you want to work one of these through properly, that is what those conversations are for. Whoever you end up doing it with, [five questions to ask before hiring a career coach](https://www.mattrutherford.co.uk/five-questions-to-ask-before-hiring-a-career-coach/) is worth reading first, and that includes if the answer is me.
